What would you do if you discovered God had given you a very unusual gift? You could ‘leap’ from one place to another just by thinking about it. Just imagine the money you could save on gasoline alone.

Suppose you were lying on the table at your acupuncturist and you are thinking about a cutting board your ex-wife insists she must have. You remember exactly where it is; in a box in her garage. Suddenly you are standing in her garage, dressed in your underwear, with little pins sticking out of your back. You have no idea how you got there, how you’re going to get out of that locked garage and go back to your acupuncturist, without your pants or your wallet, or how you’re going to explain the situation to your ex-wife if she comes home and finds you there.

The Bible says God gives us each different gifts. James got a doozy, and he’s not all that happy with God about it either. Why couldn’t he get something a tad more holy, or even respectful. Something easier to understand. James new found gift gets him in a world of trouble. In the first place, people don’t believe him when he tells them he can leap.

In fact, they think he’s past due for a psychiatric evaluation, a nice way of saying he’s crazy. Then he is forced to examine his relationship with others, and with God, and finds he’s lacking in both areas. James’ struggle to find out what God wants from him reflects our own bewilderment as we strive to learn and follow His will. Geoffrey Wood has blended humor, a biting wit, and a deep exploration of faith in one novel. I’m waiting for the next one.
