Title: The Last Storyteller Author: Diane Noble Publisher: WaterBrook Press ISBN: 1-57856-399-2 Genre: Inspirational/Women/Fiction
Taite Abbot is a free spirit and she isn’t afraid to have the tattoos and piercings to prove it. When her boyfriend, Sam Wellington, leaves California to attend an esteemed medical college in Boston, Taite is ashamed to tell him that she’s pregnant. She knows Sam will want to do the right thing and marry her—and that news will destroy his dreams.
Alone and penniless, Taite does the only thing she knows to do. She goes to an old fisherman’s cottage which has been in the family for years and plans to get an abortion. When her grandma contacts her, Taite is convinced that someone has told her about the pregnancy and that grandma plans to talk her out of it. But when Taite arrives at her grandmother’s house, she discovers that things are worse than she originally thought. Will grandma live long enough to tell the ancient stories one last time—and possibly heal her hurting granddaughter in the process?
Intermingled in with the contemporary romance is an ancient medieval story. When the story is first introduced, I was a bit confused, as the story went from contemporary to historical without warning and I had to look back before I could realize what was happening. I grew to care deeply for Taite, her grandmother, and Sam, and hoped that Taite wouldn’t make some serious mistakes.
The Last Storyteller is the first book I’ve had the pleasure of reading by Diane Noble and I hope it isn’t the last. The story is a difficult one which should speak to a lot of modern women. The story is realistic in all aspects. I wanted to reach out to Taite and give her the love she craved. Discussion questions are included at the end, making this book ideal for book and reading clubs.
