Title: Land of Promise Author: Carol Cox Publisher: Heartsong Presents ISBN: 1-58660-998-X Genre: Inspirational/Historical/Romance Elizabeth Simmons wants to make her own way in the world. A firm believer in women’s rights, she feels suffocated by her society queen mother and sister. Against her family’s advice, she agrees to go to the Arizona Territory to care for an ailing acquaintance. She hopes that this will help her get her feet into the community so she can find out what needs are greatest and open her own business to meet those needs. Elizabeth is horrified when she arrives and discovers that her hosts only allowed her to come to marry her off to an acquaintance who has agreed to pay them a fee if Elizabeth marries their son. Michael O’Roarke left a bright future as a lawyer behind in order to go to the Arizona Territory to keep tabs on his unprincipled father. His job as a delivery man and watching his father, claim all his attention . . . until he becomes acquainted with spunky Elizabeth.
When Michael rescues a singer from a life of misery, the story takes an interesting turn, adding excitement to the story. Will Elizabeth marry the man that her hosts have chosen for her or will she be forced out on her own before she is ready?
Land of Promise seems to be more of a women’s fiction than a romance, as the romance in the story is not the main focus. The story seems to revolve more around Elizabeth’s desire to make a life for herself in a world dominated by men.
Land of Promise is a short, easy-to-read book, which is sure to please. Pick it up today! |
