Title: Lakeside Author: Mary Davis Publisher: Heartsong Presents ISBN: 1-59310-607-6 Genre: Inspirational/Romance After ten years of tragedy, Lorelei Hayes has no hope. A drunk driver has killed her parents, leaving her with a bad hip, and a house fire takes the life of her aunt and brother. In an attempt to regain peace, she goes to her friend’s lakeside cottage and prays for healing and rest. Science teacher Garth Kessel has been in love with Lorelei for over ten years. When she was a young teenager, he stole a kiss from her. Now, he’s afraid Lorelei might recognize him—and yet afraid she might not. Garth goes out of his way to be kind to the nice Lorelei, and for awhile their relationship seems to be progressing. But Lorelei has a secret, a secret which will keep her from enjoying life. Is it possible for Lorelei to move beyond her past to embrace a future? Lakeside is the first book in Mary Davis’ series about Mackinac Island. I enjoyed reading a novel set in Michigan. I never had the privilege of visiting the Island, and enjoyed reading Mary’s descriptions of it. Lorelei is a realistic character, and Garth a loveable hero. I enjoyed some of the quirky secondary characters too, especially Garth’s younger sister. Lakeside is the ideal book to read for a mini-vacation without leaving home. It’s also the ideal book to take along with you on vacation. I thoroughly loved every page of Lakeside. The faith message is expertly woven in without being preachy and the story-line is sure to grab your attention and hold on. $4.95. 174 pages.
