Julia Wortham wants to be a reflection of Emma, the godly woman who left her home and land to Julia, Samuel, and their children when she went home to be with Lord.

As Julia and Samuel struggle to make ends meet, to keep their family fed, and to help their neighbor who lost his wife in childbirth, Julia is faced with several situations, which cause her to question God. She has learned to live off the land and to give God thanks for even the small things.

However, there comes a time when her faith and her love for Samuel are tested to their limits. She keeps asking herself how Emma would deal with this situation and what would God have her do.

Samuel’s brother shows up at their house with a small child, Katie, and brings all kinds trouble, not only for Julia’s family but also for their neighbors. Summer is here, food is in short supply, accidents begin to occur.

It seems that she and Samuel can hardly make it. Will Julia and Samuel find the faith to keep going and to keep looking to the Lord for the answers? Or will their circumstances become too much to handle?

Author Leisha Kelly writes Katie's Dream in first person. The rural setting of life in the 1930’s comes to life through vivid descriptions. I could feel Julia’s hurt, pain, desperation, but also the joy and peace when answers came.

Julia has such a peaceful, gentle sprit. I could picture Samuel with his strong shoulders and back, with a quiet determination to make the farm support them.

Having grown up in the country through the 1940 and 1950’s, I knew those times. I lived among those people, went to church with them, and what little social life there was I shared with them.

Katie's Dream is not only well written, but from my own experience, very historically correct.  I highly recommend Katie's Dream to anyone wanting an interesting read. You will also have a grand view of how our forefathers lived. ($12.99, 330 pages)
