Title: Just A Sister Away Author: Renita J. Weems Publisher: Warner Books ISBN: 0-446-57894-0 Genre: Inspirational/Nonfiction/Devotional
In Just A Sister Away Renita J. Weems uses the stories of biblical women to delve deep into the emotional and spiritual pains and triumphs of black women everywhere. Ms. Weems explores such issues as honor, integrity, sexuality, abuse, and relationships, and teaches biblical solutions and consequences to present day issues.
After each devotional Ms. Weems has included questions and plenty of blank lines to answer the questions. The devotionals focus on well-known biblical characters, such as:
Hagar and Sarah Naomi and Ruth Martha and Mary Vashti and Esther Among many others
The devotionals are written in an easy-to-read format, but I had some issues with Ms. Weems’ theology. She indicated that, for instance, Hagar was raped by Abraham. She also seems to be under the impression that the biblical stories were not only true life events but also prequels to the events that African-American woman would have to face in later years, such as slavery and having to endure being raped by their white masters.
If you are an African-American woman, you will probably get a lot out of Just A Sister Away because it is a well-written, well-thought-out devotional. As a white woman, I found some of the comparisons between biblical stories and African-American history a bit stretching and was uncomfortable with the liberties taken there. $22.95, hard cover. 220 pages.
