Genre: Inspirational/Historical/Romance

Laina Brighton shocks everyone when she drops everything in New York when her husband dies and moves to Philadelphia, turning her grand mansion into an orphanage. Laina had been miserable, believing she’d never had children of her own, so when a street child is run over while Laina watches, she takes the opportunity to reach out to the boy and help him recover. One child multiplies to over fifty, but Laina is still lonely.

Thaddeous Allen is a poor doctor, a former street kid himself, who has a heart for the orphans. But since he is poor and practicing medicine takes a better part of his life, he has given up the idea of having a wife and children of his own and dedicated himself to his work. Why then is he fighting this continuous attraction to Laina? Is there hope for love after all?

Joy For Mourning is the sequel to Dorothy Clark’s first book, Beauty for Ashes. I enjoyed revisiting with the hero and heroine from the first book and getting to know Laina and Thad. Ms. Clark did a good job of bringing the characters to life, although I think she could have spent more time on Thad, as he is not as three-dimensional as Laina.

All in all, Joy For Mourning was a beautiful read, and I felt for the children that Laina tries to save. I highly recommend Joy For Mourning for an enjoyable read, anytime. Discussion questions are included at the beginning of the book.  $12.95. 296 pages.
