Devastation rocked Galveston, Texas, on Saturday, September 8, 1900, unlike any seen before or since. A massive hurricane roared over the island and swept away homes, businesses and six to eight thousand people. Shattered in a few hours, the town reeled.  In the eye of the storm, Brent Murphy, Emma Sanders, Sister Henrietta, and the editor of the town newspaper find themselves searching for answers. Each with their own questions.

Brent longs for a father’s acceptance. Emma wants to serve and be loved. Sister Henrietta questions her vocation and location. And Editor Everett Maxwell needs a good story. Will the Lord meet their needs? What good can come of such havoc and loss of life?

Janice Thompson has woven fact with fiction using great skill. The reader recognizes the importance of the timeline laid out before each character’s actions, and longs to urge them off the island. Ticking away, time slips up and catches each one vulnerable to the storm’s fury. It is in this wreckage the rays of hope shine forth. Hope in a plan and a future.

Thompson blends in real characters from the actual event which lend weight to her story. Clara Barton’s appearance is one. Real and imaginary heroes led this reader to cheer for victories and lessons learned. Hurricane grips you and won’t let you go.
