I was very pleased to learn Annie was sending me another box of books to review, especially considering I recently used one of my book sprees, which I only do occasionally, and wasn’t going to be able to buy anymore books for awhile (I have enough to keep me busy, so don’t feel sorry for me). So I reached in the box and dug out Hideaway by Hannah Alexander.
Never having read Alexander’s books before, basically, Annie said “suspense” and I came running. Hideaway proved to be yet another book I only was going to read a few chapters of, then stayed up late on a Saturday night reading the end.
Hideaway has several subplots, but, ultimately, it’s about a doctor, Cheyenne, whose sister is killed in a car crash, and, through a series of events, runs away to a little country town on leave. There she meets up with the director of a boy’s ranch, named Dane, a young man who goes by Blaze even though he swears he’s not an arsonist, a persnickety town mayor named Austin, and a wonderful older couple named Red and Bertie for neighbors.
Of course, the fun starts when Hideaway’s local vandal starts burning buildings and shooting barn cats for grins. No one has a clue, and old grudges lead to pointing fingers at the ranch boys. Then there’s Blaze, the young son of a veterinarian who may or may not have actually committed arson.
This truly is a good read, ladies and gentlemen. It asks all the questions of faith and God and trust without sounding cheesy or simply thrown in to please the Christian audience. I enjoyed it, and look forward to reading the other four or five Hannah Alexander books still in my box.
