Laura McKay has learned the hard way that the only person she can count on is herself. Her husband died leaving her penniless and she has a deaf child needing her protection. Laura hopes that remodeling the only piece of property she owns and selling it will provide the necessary funds to provide the surgery her daughter needs to hear. A surgery that their insurance won’t cover.

Ryan Flanagan has applied for a different job inside the fire department where he works as a fire investigator. When Laura’s property catches fire, he discovers that an arsonist is at work. Desperate to protect Laura and her child, Ryan goes above and beyond the call of duty, installing motion protectors and security systems.

But that doesn’t appear to be enough. Who is behind the fires? Is it teenagers, looking for a lark? Is it a fire-bug, who just loves to watch buildings burn? Or, as evidence suggests, is Laura attempting to burn the property herself to collect the insurance money?

Her Only Hero is book four in the Flanagan series. I haven’t read the other books in the series, but I would like to read them, just to find out how the other brothers (and a cousin) find their true loves. Her Only Hero easily stands alone though.

I could sympathize with Laura, wanting to take care of everything herself. She wasn’t used to having help; she was familiar with no one caring. When the Flanagan family stepped up to assist her in her time of need, Laura was prepared to rob them of the blessing of helping her. Ryan is a fun-loving hero, yet serious enough to make a good fire investigator. I found myself rooting for this hero as he tries to succeed in a job that requires more brains than brawn—and Ryan admits to being more action than thought.

Pick up a copy of Her Only Hero for a quick read that is sure to entertain. It’s the perfect size to toss in the tote for a final trip to the beach before school starts. $4.99. 241 pages.
