When Laura McKay's husband dies, the only thing he leaves her is an old, run down house. Laura has a possible buyer if she can only get the place renovated by the time the lady comes to view the property. The money from the sale of the house is desperately needed so that Laura's young deaf daughter can get a cochlear implant to help her hear again. But Laura encounters one problem after another. When a suspicious fire erupts on her back porch, Laura is considered a suspect.

Ryan Flanagan can't explain why he's attracted to stubborn Laura McKay. He knew her back in high school, but a quiet wallflower like Laura held no interest for a popular charmer like him. But things have changed. When he tries to help her, she lets him know she doesn't need his assistance. She can handle things herself. Ryan may be fearless when fighting fires, but getting emotionally involved scares him spitless. The harder he tries to stay away from Laura and her sweet daughter, the more he finds himself at her house, trying to help them.

When Ryan's boss on the arson squad points his finger at Laura, Ryan knows he must do whatever he can to clear her name. But can he help her without losing his heart—or his job? Will he fail Laura like he's failed so many others in the past?

Her Only Hero is the fourth book in Marta Perry's popular series, The Flanagans, a set of stories about a family of firefighters. Ryan fears his decision to change jobs will disappoint his father, but it seems that's all he does these days anyway. A happy-go-lucky rascal, Ryan has become an expert in avoiding romantic commitment. Sometimes you'll want to hug Ryan, and other times, smack some sense into him. When Laura and her cute daughter come on the scene, Ryan knows he's in trouble. His efforts to help Laura and just be a friend soon becomes more than he can handle.

Her Only Hero is a charming book. Four-year-old Mandy nearly steals the scene as her fingers fly fast when she talks with her hands. Readers will easily sympathize with the struggles Laura faces as a single mom working to provide for her daughter after her husband dies and leaves them nearly penniless. After a rocky marriage, Laura is determined not to make the same mistake twice.

I enjoyed this story every bit as much as the others in the series. Her Only Hero easily stands alone, but readers will probably want to read the stories about the other Flanagans to see what happens in the lives of these fascinating firefighters. Intriguing and heart-warming, Her Only Hero is a winner. ($4.99, 250 pages)
