Jason Boyer’s life is changed in the moments it takes for a car to crash through the guard rails and plunging down a ravine. Now, Jason finds himself the unwilling king of his father’s business empire, an empire that is corrupt.

Jason doesn’t want this legacy, but his wife, Katie, does. Katie readily admits that she married Jason for his money, and this is just the icing on the cake. Katie doesn’t understand why Jason wants to turn down his inheritance. Even Jason’s younger brother doesn’t understand Jason.

People are calling. Governors. Senators. All demanding to talk to Jason. Soon it becomes apparent that Jason’s father’s death was murder – and that the murderer is not targeting Jason and all he holds dear. Will Jason be able to find out what he needs to know to save his life? Or will the inheritance cost him his life?

The Heir is the debut novel by talented new author Paul Robertson. Loosely based on the biblical story of the rich young man who went to see Jesus but ended up walking away because his riches were too much to give up, Mr. Robertson wanted to explore what might happen if a rich young man was willing to try to give up his riches.

My attention was caught immediately by opening hook in this book and I didn’t want to put it down. The Heir has what it takes to hold my attention to the end, even though much of the story is told and not shown. I enjoyed the mix of politics, privilege, and murder, and will definitely look for more by this author.

The characters were well developed and interesting, and the faith message is intricately woven in. There were plenty of red herrings in the book so the reader is kept guessing who the killer might actually be. Don’t miss The Heir. $18.99 hardcover. 366 pages.
