Title: Hearts Afire Author: Marty Perry Publisher: Steeple Hill ISBN: 0373874162 Genre: Inspirational/Romance
Terry Flanagan has her finger in all aspects of the First Responders Team. From fire fighting to EMT calls, Terry does it all. She is also fighting to get a clinic for the poor migrant farm workers started so she can minister to the families who can’t afford doctor’s visits. Then the hospital assigned her to work under Dr. Jacob Landsdowne, a man who has been on Terry’s bad side since they met two years earlier.
Jacob Landsdowne’s fiancée died two years ago from a drug overdose. Terry Flanagan and her team were the first responders, but they were unable to save his fiancée. The loss almost destroyed Jacob’s career. Now he’s struggling to rebuild his career and his reputation, and he resents being saddled with a clinic for migrant farm workers when it may run everything he’s ever worked for.
Terry balks when Jacob issues a list of rules she must follow for her clinic to survive, and the first day it’s open, she disobeys one of them. Unfortunately, Jacob finds out. He goes easy on Terry—this time, but the very next day they exchange words. Can these two ever work out their differences to live peacefully?
Hearts Afire is the sixth book in the popular The Flanagans series, about a firefighting family. It was nice reconnecting with the other members of the family and seeing how their lives have changed. Terry is a sweet heroine, kind and loving, hoping to make a difference in the world. She especially has a heart for the migrant farm workers and will do anything to take care of them, their needs, and even take on political issues for them. Jacob, on the other hand, while being kind, is a typical arrogant doctor, and he resents it when his orders are not followed. He is also under scrutiny from the hospital board to cut ER costs in anyway he can, and for the misfortune of his past.
Sparks fly when Terry and Jacob meet again, and I wondered if these two people would ever learn to get along. While they agreed to put their past behind them, one or the other keeps bringing it up. The story is sweet and well written, and the faith message is expertly woven in. Readers will enjoy catching up with the Flanagan family to see what is happening with their favorite characters.
