Firefighter paramedic Terry Flanagan is hoping to make a difference in the lives of poor migrant workers with the health clinic that she has helped get started. But then she learns a man from her past has been assigned to oversee the project. She can’t help wondering if Dr. Jacob Landsdowne can forget the past, or if he will use his influence to put an end to the clinic just to get back at her. Besides, he’s not the only one who feels she’s wasting too much money on the poor.

Jacob had hoped that his move to the small town of Suffolk, PA, would help give him a new start. But running into Terry and having to work with her on the clinic project is a distraction he doesn’t need. Still, he has to admit Terry is helping people that few others give a hoot about. Can he put the tragedy that changed his life two years ago behind him and start anew? Will Terry help him learn that he can’t control everything and needs to let God be in charge of his life?

Hearts Afire is the next segment in Marta Perry’s exciting series about a family of firefighters, The Flanagans. Readers will enjoy Terry’s story and seeing how other members of her family are faring. Hearts Afire is loaded with conflict as Terry and Jacob try to move past the tragic event that changed them both. It’s hard to imagine romance could blossom between these two, but it is delightful to watch it unfold. Marta Perry’s characters come alive on the page, making you care for them and keeping you turning the pages. Hearts Afire is a heart-warming story that will hold your interest and leave you smiling at the end. (256 pages, $4.99)
