Title: A Hearth In Candlewood Author: Delia Parr Publisher: Bethany House ISBN: 0-7642-0086-0 Genre: Inspirational/Historical/Fiction
Fifty-one year old Emma Garrett runs Hill House, a boarding house set on a hill at the edge of town. Emma is gifted with hospitality and ministers to those who reside at Hill House, whether it is temporary or more permanent.
When eighty-year-old Widow Leonard shows up at Hill House to get away from her grown sons and a heated land dispute, Emma welcomes her, even if she’s forced to give up her own bed. Wanting to help settle the land dispute, and send Widow Leonard back home with her sons, Emma steps in and tries to help. She’s horrified when her own property is called into question.
Acclaimed author Delia Parr has penned another winner with A Hearth In Candlewood. Book one in the Candlewood Trilogy, A Hearth In Candlewood is sure to appeal to readers. Emma is a loveable heroine, confident of her abilities and skills at proprietress of a boarding house. Her faith in God is unwavering, and she challenges her guests with homespun wisdom as well as her belief in God.
The only thing I really didn’t like about A Hearth In Candlewood is that there were too many widows in the story and sometimes I got confused who was who, since they were all referred to as Widow (insert last name).” Otherwise, the story is interesting, and held my interest. $12.99. 202 pages.
