Title: Front Porch Princess Author: Kathryn Springer Publisher: Steeple Hill Café ISBN: 0-373-78558-5 Genre: Inspirational/Momlit Elise Penny has always hated Prichett. Her mother forced her to move there with the family when she was only twelve, and ever since Elise has dreamed of returning home to Chicago and making something of herself. When she won the Prichett beauty pageant as a high school graduate, she also won a husband. Sam Penny was waiting to propose as soon as she descended the steps. Now Elise’s daughter, Bree, is a high school graduate, and Elise doesn’t want Bree to be stuck in Prichett forever. Bree has been accepted at a university, to major in pre-vet, and Elise is so excited . . . at least until Riley Cabbott starts paying attention to Bree. Now Bree isn’t so sure about going to university. Elise sees her daughter’s chance to escape Prichett going down the drain, and she is determined to do anything to get Bree out of town. But someone in Prichett has nominated Elise to be in the Proverbs 31 pageant, and Elise is as determined not to be in the competition as the community is to see Elise win. Will God teach Elise something about herself and her town? Or will she push everyone, including her daughter and God, away? Front Porch Princess is a fun story about life in Small Town, America. I could relate to Elise even though I don’t share her aversion to small town life. I understood her frustration of being the center of attention in town and wondering when someone would have a baby and thus remove Elise from the headlines. The faith message is expertly woven in without being preachy. I thoroughly enjoyed Front Porch Princess and can’t wait for the next book in the series coming in 2007. I highly recommend Front Porch Princess as a fantastic read. $12.95. 312 pages.
