Ensign Rachel Whitney is thrilled when she is assigned duty on remote Frasier Island, a tiny rock in the Pacific with top secret classification. The commander of the three-man compound is Lt. George Hudson, and his reputation is legendary. Rachel can’t wait to meet her hero, but Lt. Hudson is nothing like she’d expected. It’s obvious to her that he’s not pleased to have one of his two men replaced with a woman. Though he doesn’t trust her, she’s out to prove she’s a highly-trained sailor, as capable as any man.

Having a woman on his tiny island is a distraction George doesn’t need. He’d begged for this assignment three years earlier and had been in command ever since he arrived on Frasier Island. That he’s attracted to the fiery ensign doesn’t help. He deals with his feelings by treating Rachel harsher than he has any man in his command and avoiding her whenever possible.

Rachel is certain George hasn’t told her everything about their job on the island. But when she learns the truth—that they are protecting a substance that could destroy America if it got in the wrong hands—Rachel is shocked. She’s angry that George didn’t trust her enough to tell her the truth when she first arrived, but then she asks God to help her with her attitude. She realizes her hurt stems from her admiration and newfound love for George—a love she can never acknowledge.

When Frasier Island is attacked, George and Rachel must unite to protect it. But against such odds, their hopes of victory look slim. Will George and Rachel struggle to survive using their only their skills or rely on God’s help? Will they survive against such a great foe to explore their love for each other?

FRASIER ISLAND is one of the best books I’ve read this year. It’s romantic suspense at its best. Susan Page Davis does an expert job establishing fictional Fraiser Island as a remote military outpost. Her characters are true-to-life, and the conflict will keep readers quickly turning the pages. The military jargon seems right on track, showing she’s done her research well.

George is a tough, hurting hero who seems a bit hard-nosed in the beginning, but his well-ordered world has been upturned with Rachel’s arrival. He makes a great hero, especially when reader’s see how hard he’s fighting his unwanted attraction to her. Though Rachel struggles with her temper at times, she is an admirable heroine, who adapts quickly and without complaint to a rugged environment. Readers will find FRASIER ISLAND a fast-moving suspense with a romance that will leave you pulling your hair out at times and smiling at other times. Readers will be happy to know that a sequel—Finding Marie—is in the works. Watch out suspense writers—there’s a new gal in town. (330 pgs, $13.99)
