Title: Fool's Gold (The Skinners of Goldfield, Book One) Genre: Inspirational/Historical/Fiction It's 1905, and the Skinner family--O.T., Dola, precocious Rita Ann, winsome Corrie, Punky, and Tommy-Blue are heading for a new life in their "Promised Land" of Dinuba, California. Talk about a detour. When O.T. and his family aid Lucky Jack Gately and his men, they don't anticipate landing smack dab in the middle of a feud. Nor do O.T. and Dola imagine staying in the town of Goldfield, California, which has more alkali dust than gold. Greed is the norm in Goldfield. O.T.'s homespun ways and love for his fellow man cause a ripple effect across the settlement. He can barely provide for his own family, but he refuses to compromise his standards. When O.T. and Dola--in spite of their own needs--start giving to the destitute, people start to notice. And some even begin to change. The Skinner children even befriend old Mrs. Marsh, who totes a shotgun and considers everyone as would-be claim jumpers. I won't tell you if they find any gold in Goldfield, but they do bring plenty of God's love. I'd call that rich enough. Pick up this book to read about times gone by. Laugh out loud and feel your heart touched by the simple living faith of the Skinner family. |
