The Honorable Miss Clarissant Behn has a secret—one that would ruin her family’s reputation if it’s discovered. But she has no choice. To save her family from proverty, Clarissant has started a trade business—producing and selling perfumes, ones that are highly popular among the town.

Tristan Apking has returned from his travels, a wealthy man, and finally able to win the heart of his lady-love, Miss Rowan. When he arrives, he learns the horrible truth. Rowan hasn’t waited for him as she promised, but married another man, less than three months after Tristan left. Tristan believes she married for money so the husband would support the family.

Tristan’s return and Clarissant’s debut party seem to have unearthed someone who is out for blood. Keeping secrets could cost someone their life. But who is after whom—and why?

Family Guardian is Laurie Alice Eakes first book with Avalon and it’s really cute. I’m sure we’ll see a lot more by this author. The copy I have has a couple errors in it that might be corrected in future issues.

Unlike the other regencies I’ve read, Clarissant is a very strong woman, not so worried about the ton and finding a rich husband during the first season. Tristan struggles through most of the book to get over his inflated view of Rowan and Clarrissant’s deception to keep him from discovering the truth. The book is expensive at $21.95 (hardcover) but it’s a story that isn’t easily forgotten. 214 pages.
