Genre: Inspirational/Historical/Suspense

When her employer suddenly dies, kitchen maid Lysette Percell is shocked to learn the Langley family accuses her of murdering the old woman. But even more unnerving is Mrs. Langley's deathbed confession to Lysette.

Lysette knows she's innocent, but the obnoxious Scotland Yard inspector, Cedric Insly, seems determined to prove her guilty. The man is not beyond using his charm and presses her hard to make a confession. Though she finds the man irritating and pretentious, her betraying heart beats a bit faster whenever he's near.

When Mrs. Langley's will is read, the family is up in arms at the results. Lysette suffers some near misses, and is convinced someone is trying to kill her. Could the real murderer be trying to silence her? And those noises she hears at night-could they be intruders searching for the legendary treasure supposedly buried somewhere on the huge estate? Will Lysette be able to prove her innocence to the determined Inspector Insly or will he haul her off to Scotland Yard in chains?

Set in 1880 England, Fading Crimson is an inspirational suspense that will grab your interest quickly and hold it. Everything seems to be going wrong for poor Lysette, but she still manages to draw on her faith and show kindness to the very people who wish to do her in. Though a lowly servant, she doesn't repay evil with evil but graciously shows God's love to those in darkness.

I enjoyed seeing Cedric's transformation as much as seeing the story's mysteries solved. In the beginning, he is conceited and oversteps the boundaries of his job. I had my doubts as to whether his transformation was possible, but in the end, he is a likeable enough fellow.

Fading Crimson is an intriguing debut novel by author Jessica Davies. There where times I wish the transitions between scenes were clearer and that some scenes were explained in greater detail, but the mystery, suspense, and romance will keep readers turning the pages to see what happens.
