Title: Escaping The Stress Trap Author: Mary Southerland Publisher: Harvest House ISBN 0-7369-1730-6 Genre: Inspirational/Nonfiction
Mary Southerland doesn’t deny that stress is a normal part of life, but she offers some very good advice for controlling it. Most of us can identify with the struggle to do everything, be everything, and please everyone. In Escaping the Stress Trap we are reminded that God made us. He loves us, and we lonely have to please Him.
She correctly shows that stress is a deadly disease, sapping our strength and shortening our lives. One point she made struck home with me, “Fatigue is not a spiritual gift.” It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that wearing ourselves out “in the service of the Lord” makes us just a little more holy. But Mary points out that rest is not an option. God rested on the seventh day, not because He needed it, but because we do.
I loved Mary Southerland’s version of the 23rd Psalm. From now on, a copy of it will hang on the bulletin board next to my desk, so I can glance it when stress is sapping my ability to do my best. In addition to tips on how to beat stress, this book is well salted with scriptural references to back up what she says. There is even a Bible Study Guide in the back of the book. Escaping the Stress Trap is a well-written book with a timely message.
