Title: The Englisher Author: Beverly Lewis Publisher: Bethany House ISBN: 0-7642-0106-9Genre: Inspirational/Romance Annie Zook reluctantly agrees to give up her beloved art work and in preparation to join the Amish church. But even though she turns away from her creative outlet, she finds other things to tempt her away from the Amish, in the form of one very handsome Englisher, Ben Martin. Annie’s modern friend, Louisa Stratford, is still visiting, and she is growing interested in a young Amish boy, Sam Glick. Though she has put a hold on her art work in respect for her Amish hosts, but she is beginning to feel the pull back to civilization. Ben Martin is attracted to the young Amish woman, and even more so to the area. When he discovers a painting of a covered bridge, he is inexplicably drawn to it. He seeks out the bridge and then starts learning startling secrets of a horrific event which occurred there years earlier. The Englisher is the second book in the Annie’s People series. Readers will want to read the first book, The Preacher’s Daughter, before reading The Englisher because certain things will not make sense without having the background. I enjoyed reconnecting with Annie, Louisa, Ben, and other characters in this book and am anxiously looking forward to reading the third book in the series due out this fall. Beverly Lewis has done an excellent job developing three dimensional characters. She has also woven in a faith message, making this one of the first books of hers I’ve read that actually addresses the salvation issue, something that most Amish do not believe in. I highly recommend The Englisher for a wonderful read. $13.99. 344 pages.
