Title: The Encore Author: Sarah Anne Sumpolec Publisher: Moody Publishers ISBN 0-8024-6458-0 Genre: Inspirational/Young Adult/ Fiction
Beka Madison is a senior in high school and things seem to be going well, at least until after the holidays. Now Beka has been called into the principal’s office and is in trouble because the song she sang mentioned God, and someone complained. Not only that, but the school’s favorite teacher might be fired over this issue.
The most popular girl in school, Mia, is probably behind the complaints, but Beka can’t prove it, and everyone is mad at Beka. Her car has been vandalized, her sister is acting mean and aloof, Beka is miserable.
Not only that, but boy troubles abound. Mark is always there with a shoulder for Beka to cry on, but what about Josh? He’s away at college, but he also wants a relationship with her. Will either relationship have a chance when the music industry hears Beka’s song?
The Encore is book five in the Becoming Beka series, and is the first book in the series I’ve read. I’ve enjoyed reading the story, and felt for Beka, but I think the story would have made a whole lot more sense if I’d been able to read the other books in the series first. As it was, I came in at the end of the story and had no idea what was happening in many threads.
Still, I enjoyed The Encore, and highly recommend it to teenagers. Teens are sure to relate to the troubles Beka faces and will cheer her on. Pick up The Encore for your favorite teenager today. $12.99. 260 pages.
