Title: Edge of Honor Genre: Inspirational/Historical Romance
Quentin Larribee’s future is bright. One of the country’s best surgeons, he’s set to take over his soon-to-be father-in-law’s prosperous practice, gaining most of New York Cities wealthiest people as his patients. His fiancée, Irene, is wealthy, beautiful, and anxious to wed. But Quentin has to wonder if life has more to it than social events every night after a long day at the hospital. Orphaned at an early age, Quentin and his sister, Hannah, were left to raise their younger siblings alone. As a result, both of them matured faster than their years. Quentin lives with the crippled Hannah, who is shunned by most of New York City’s best, including Quentin’s fiancée, because of her handicap. Quentin is unaware of how Irene treats Hannah. Drafted into the Civil War just months before it ends, Quentin is unwilling to purchase his freedom. He’d rather serve his time than send someone else to fight in his place. In spite of Irene’s objections, Quentin goes off to war, confident it will soon be over. After all, he’ll be safe, stationed in a Civil War hospital tending to wounded soldiers. But only days before the war officially ends, the Rebels unexpectedly attacked. Caught in the confusion, Quentin finds himself with a rifle in his hand, fighting side-by-side with the Union solders. Blinded by dirt, and fallen in a gulch, Quentin only sees the enemy uniform coming toward him. In fear for his life, he shoots, killing the soldier. Only later does he find out the man was surrendering. Quentin is haunted by this unnecessary death, especially when he discovers the man was married and a father of three. Quentin returns to New York City determined to make amends to the dead man’s widow. Quentin is advised by his friends to send money to the widow. However, he doesn’t know the widow’s address, only that she lives in Helena, Arkansas. Needing to know the widow’s circumstances, Quentin decides to move to Helena, Arkansas, himself, on a temporary basis. Once there, he attempts to save Eden Breckenridge, the soldier’s widow, and her family from financial ruin. But in trying to solve one problem, he creates another, when he falls in love with the widow of the man he killed—a woman who knows nothing of his terrible secret. Edge of Honor is a gripping story you won’t be able to put down. It’s a great book to curl up with this winter. I highly recommend it. | |
