Fern Coulter has invited Jeb Nubey home to Oklahoma to meet her family, since they are now engaged. While they are in Oklahoma, Jeb has some meetings with a church there that is considering him as a candidate for the pulpit. Fern is not at all happy with Jeb’s decision to meet with this church. She finally became accustomed to the idea of being a pastor’s wife in Nazareth, Arkansas. Oklahoma has some unpleasant ghosts for her to contend with and she isn’t convinced that the church would ever accept her as the pastor’s wife.

Jeb’s oldest girl, Angel, is excited when she locates her oldest birth sister, but when Angel meets Claudia, she is shocked by how needy Claudia is. She has two small children, her husband has run off, and they have no money to pay bills. Angel also meets a young man who’s a real heart-throb, but he is also dangerous. When Angel disappears, Jeb and Fern are frantic with worry. Will Jeb accept the church in Oklahoma, or will he return home, content to stay in Nazareth? Will they locate Angel?

In the final book in the Millwood Hollow series, Earthly Vows, Jeb and Fern learn hard lessons that sometimes our decisions will hurt those we love. I recommend reading the earlier books in the series before reading Earthly Vows, but still, the story stands alone. You will just miss all the events leading up to where they’re at in life.

I didn’t care much for Fern, and wondered what Jeb saw in her. Jeb is still a real sweetheart, with a shepherd’s heart. You could tell he really cares for people and for helping the hurting. If you like historical fiction, you won’t want to miss Earthly Vows. With wedding season coming on, it’s a great story to read, to remind us what a wedding during the Great Depression might have been like. Discussion questions are included at the end. $13.99. 309 pages.
