Author: Robert Liparulo Publisher: Thomas Nelson Books ISBN: 0785261761 Genre: Apocalyptic/Thriller Part CSI. Part MacGyver. Robert Liparulo’s first novel, Comes A Horseman, will make you want to join the FBI. Or watch an episode of the X-Files. Anything but put the book down. Brady Moore is a government agent, on the tail of the Pelletier Killer, a serial murderer with a penchant for beheading his victims. Brady and his partner, Alicia Wagner can find no common thread amongst the deceased except for a few odd references to near-death experiences and a Catholic priest-author who writes about the same subject. When it is uncovered that the deaths are linked to not only a psychotic murderer, but to a powerful political figure named Luco Scaramuzzi, things go south. Or rather, East. Brady and Alicia take off for Italy with intentions of finding the one who hired the killer and instead, find themselves in a secret plot to secure a place for a man who could very well be the Antichrist. Coming into this novel, never having heard of Liparulo, two things worried me. The first was his attention to historical detail. While I enjoyed the story of The Da Vinci Code, I was not eager to repeat the experience. Fortunately, Liparulo has the unique ability to give historical depth and credibility, without leveling the tale with undue exposition. My second concern came when my eyes crossed over the word AntiChrist. Christian apocalyptic thrillers tend to follow the same predictable storyline. Comes A Horseman, however, is a revision of neither theme. And just as my concerns had peaked, I found that the author had thrown in a twist so perfect, that I literally had to take pause and enjoy it. Comes A Horseman is the first novel by Robert Liparulo, though you would never know it by reading it. This is a fast-paced page-turner as gracefully written as anything churned out by Koontz or Crichton. That’s saying something. |
