Things changed quickly for Lois Johnson when she became a Christian-her wealthy fiancé promptly dumped her, and she quit her job in an attorney's office to work as secretary for her new church. She's committed to serving the Lord and growing as a new believer. Lois isn't looking for a man and tells God if He wants her to have one, He will have to drop one in her lap. While attending her sister and brother-in-law's ventriloquist performance, a funny clown in big, floppy shoes stumbles over a child and lands in Lois's lap. She is stunned that a man literally fell into her lap shortly after her prayer. Could God possibly mean for her to get to know this humorous man?

Joe Richey has been making people laugh his whole life. He's the guy everyone likes, but nobody really knows the truth about. His comedy is an act to keep him from talking and thinking about the hurts of his childhood. Now Joe has met Lois, a serious woman who's come to mean a lot to him. But every time she tries to talk to him about his family, he launches into a comedy routine. Can Joe learn to deal with his pain and explain his hurtful past to Lois, or will he drive her away because he's always clowning around?

I found Joe Richey to be a different kind of hero. Outwardly, he's cute and likeable, but on the inside, he's deeply wounded by his past. His comedy is funny and clever, but as Lois discovers, it is annoying when Joe can never be serious.

Rather than being an action-oriented book, Clowning Around digs deep and shows that even strong Christians have struggles they must deal with and overcome. The clowning plot is different and moves along at a slow, steady pace. Lois and Joe's characters are well drawn and will have you rooting for their romance to succeed.
