Title: Christmas Duty Authors: Paige Winship Dooly, Janelle Burnham Schneider, Tammy Shuttlesworth, and Jill Stengl Publisher: Barbour Books ISBN: 1-58660-846-0 Genre: Inspirational/Contemporary/Romance
"About-Face"—by Jill Stengl—Lt. Cathy Guillard is trying to hide a crush she has on Capt. Tim Falkirk, a fighter pilot with a bad reputation. But Tim professes to have faith in Christ. His first Christmas as a new Christian holds great meaning for Tim, and he tries to be worthy of the pretty lieutenant who seems immune to his charm. Will Cathy ever be convinced of Tim’s beliefs? Will she learn to trust him?
"Outranked by Love"—by Tammy Shuttlesworth—Hayden Jacobs and Lacey White meet while stationed at the same Air Force base. Hayden had been raised to believe that power and status are the most important things in the world, but Lacey has neither. Will Hayden find the true purpose for life? Can Lacey ever find happiness?
"Seeking Shade"—by Paige Winship Dooly—Special Ops Agent Nick McLeod is sent to rescue Shade Matthews, his former fiancée, who is being held captive by a band of drug smugglers. He only has a few weeks to find, rescue, and convince Shade that he still loves her. Will he be able to save Shade’s life and win her heart once more?
"A Distant Love"—by Janelle Burnham Schneider—Capt. Katrina Falkirk is determined to serve as a peacekeeper in Israel’s Golan Heights without entanglement. Yet when she is forced to make appearances at social events during the holidays, she finds herself unwillingly pursued by the provost marshal, Capt. Brian Smith. Will Katrina learn to trust Brian with her heart?
Life is never peaceful in the military. Christmas causes special challenges and life-altering changes. In Christmas Duty, readers will witness some of the challenges and changes that servicemen and women experience.
Out of the four novellas my favorites were "About-Face" and "A Distant Love". I found the characters in these two stories realistically developed and easily identifiable. Outranked by Love and Seeking Shade were well-written, but I thought Lacey seemed to be a spoiled brat in "Outranked by Love" and "Seeking Shade" seemed contrived to me. Even though I didn’t care much for the middle two stories, the novella collection, as a whole, was an enjoyable Christmas read. Those who enjoy romance and have loved ones in the service might find special enjoyment in these military novellas.
