Title: Child of Mine Author: Bonnie K. Winn Publisher: Love Inspired ISBN: 0-373-87368-9 Genre: Inspirational/Contemporary/Romance
Matt Whitaker has loved his nephew, Danny, from the moment he first laid eyes on him. His brother, John, brought the baby home, heartbroken, after his rich socialite wife in California ran off and abandoned him and the baby. Tragically, John died in a car accident just a few days later, leaving Matt to raise his nephew. Matt decided then that he would take care of Danny as if he were his own.
Leah Hunter has been searching for her son for eight years, ever since her husband, Kyle, kidnapped the baby and disappeared. Now a clue leads her to the small town of Rosewood, Texas, and straight to Matt Whitaker’s door.
Sparks fly from the moment Matt and Leah meet. Matt doesn’t believe a word of what Leah’s saying. Why would John lie about his identity and about his wife abandoning them? Leah is hurt. Is everything Kyle told her a lie? She is determined to get to know her son, and to raise him as her own. How can Matt and Leah possibly work this out?
Child of Mine is an interesting story, set in small town, Texas. The characters are true southerners, friendly to outsiders until they decide they are threatening their own. The characters are realistically developed, and though the faith message is weak, it is well woven in.
Leah is a sympathetic character, desperate to find her child and bring him back home. Matt is equally real, determined to keep his nephew, now his son, safe from all harm, including strange women who claim to be his mother. I hoped they would be able to work things out in a satisfactory way. Discussion questions are included at the end of the book. $4.99. 249 pages.
