Life aboard a ship is all James MacGregor has ever known. She was born on a ship to a dying mother who named her James because the woman thought she'd birthed a son. James was raised on the Gentlemen's Folly, a merchant ship, by the ship's cook, a kind, godly man she called Papa-a man who calls her Captainess.

James loves the sea, the seamen she's known her whole life, and God. But a sudden pirate attack turns her world inside out. Papa is dead, and the heinous pirate, Bloody Gunn, reveals some startling information to James when he sees the unique ring she's wearing. Barely escaping with her life, Captainess struggles to find a decent way to support herself. The only life she knows is the sea. And back to the sea she goes, dressed as a ruddy sailor.

It only takes her new captain, William Steed, one look to know she's a woman, but by then they've already set sail. Will Captain Steed leave her on dry ground the first time they make land? Or does he possibly feel the same sparks that ignite her being whenever they're together?

Captainess is a small book but packs a wallop with an engaging, fast-paced story. I thoroughly enjoyed the uncommon setting of a romance aboard ship and nasty pirates bent on stealing James's one personal treasure-the ring her Papa gave her right before he died. James's surprise discovery will keep you quickly turning pages to discover what will happen.

There's one scene where James escapes from the pirates seemed a little too convenient, but overall the book is well-written and worth the time and money spent. J.N. Graham's Captainess is an inspiring story of a young woman who loses everything except her faith, and then learns she must forgive the very man responsible if she's ever to know peace.
