When Thelma and Wade Owens are brutally murdered, fear strikes in the heart of Cape Refuge. When investigating, Police Chief Cade finds a spear-gun belonging to his friend, Jonathon Cleary, the Owens’ son-in-law. Cade is reluctant to arrest his friend, but it soon appears he has no choice, as Jonathon was witnessed arguing with the Owens’ earlier.

Morgan Cleary is stunned by her parents’ deaths and hurt and upset by her husband’s arrest. Sure, Jonathon has a hot temper and he didn’t always agree with his in-laws, but that didn’t mean he killed him. Morgan struggles to keep Hanover House, her parents’ ministry, running, but with her husband in jail and her sister, Blair, embittered, she finds no help.

While trying to find the real murderer, Blair discovers secrets her parents had hidden for years, secrets which affect Blair’s entire outlook on life. She doesn’t want any part of her parents’ ministry or their faith—and is trying to make Morgan sell the house and put the residents out on the streets.

Now time is running out. Someone is targeting Morgan. Who is behind this? Is it one of the residents or someone else? Could Jonathon be behind everything?

I love Terri Blackstock’s books, and Cape Refuge lived up to its promises. The characterization is rich, the setting well-done, and the faith message expertly woven in. I felt for Morgan as she struggles to get past her parents’ murders and grows as a woman in faith. I could understand why Blair acted the way she did, although I thought her responses were a bit immature sometimes. Cade is a wonderful Police Chief, careful in his investigation and kind to suspects.

Don’t miss Cape Refuge, book one in the Cape Refuge series. You won’t be disappointed. Readers will also want to look for Southern Storm, book two. $12.99. 385 pages.
