First-time novelist, Traci DePree strikes a cord deep in the soul with her novel, A Can of Peas. Set on a farm in contemporary Minnesota, the story brings to the forefront the real issues of life and love as Peter and Mae Morgan choose, what they believe will be the serenity of farm life, over their busy lives in the city.

They soon discover they have less control over a life on the farm than they had over their careers. It seems nature is against them when Peter fights to keep up with the planting, harvesting and milking required to run a working farm. As a new bride, Mae is faced with loneliness and starting life over in an unfamiliar place. She struggles against wanting the attention every newlywed should have from her spouse, and being the loving, selfless wife needed by her husband, now a farmer.

In one scene, Peter has failed Mae yet again. He doesn't have time for her birthday because something's amiss with a cow and he promises to be with her the next day. But there's always something to keep him and this time it's the water well. Finally, Virginia, Peter's grandmother, tells Mae in her loving way, not to wait on Peter to come to her, but to go to him. Mae discovers from the experienced wife of a farmer, that she must join in Peter's struggles. It's what life and marriage are all about.

DePree gives a glimpse into the lives of every character in the farming community, gripping at the heart, and making the reader care about the town. Each person plays an integral role in the lives of others. And when Peter and Mae meet the greatest challenge of their young married lives, the community is there to bear their burdens with them. A heart-warming story, A Can of Peas goes a long way in putting life into perspective.
