Title: Candy Bombers Author: Robert Elmer Publisher: Zonderkidz ISBN: 0310709431 Genre: Inspirational/Juvenile/Historical/Fiction
Erich is trying to survive in Berlin, Germany during the cold war. The Russians have taken over one part of the city and the English, French, and Americans are on the other side. Erich hates the Americans because they bombed the city and killed his father, but they have food. Unfortunately, when Erich sneaks on one plane to find food, it’s empty. And he gets caught. But the American soldier is nice and gives him a candy bar, which Erich sneaks across the border and gives his starving grandmother.
Erich’s second attempt to steal food from the Americans ends up with him being a stowaway. And caught again. Thankfully, an American reporter takes care of him, his only cost is that the reporter writes a feature article on Erich and his efforts to survive. Erich resents this American soldier, but he has to trust him. Will Erich learn that Americans aren’t as bad as he believes?
Candy Bombers is the first book in The Wall series for young readers. It is set in the aftermath of WWII when the Americans are doing good will missions for the Germans. I was sympathetic with Erich, trying to get enough food to save his starving grandmother, and ease his always hungry stomach. His mother works hard for a few extra rations which never stretch far enough.
The faith message is expertly woven in and isn’t preachy. I was totally caught up in the story and will be saving this for my children to read. It’s an excellent book for homeschoolers. $6.99. 155 pages. |
