Several months have passed since Billy and Bonnie and company left off in Raising Dragons. Now, in The Candlestone, Billy’s a little wiser now, and his skills have improved, but he’s still got a lot to learn, namely, controlling his temper and subduing his own pride.  What’s safe to tell? What does he hide?  Can he or should he do this or not?

Of course, both of them are about to undergo yet another series of test in their clash with the past.   It all starts when Bonnie is tricked into the candlestone, a gem that absorbs light and acts like dragon Kryptonite. The stone is also a prison in which Bonnie is trapped.

Billy, of course, would do anything to save her, but he’s unfortunately discarded his best weapon and his dragon abilities are rendered useless.  Both teenagers have their own battles to fight, and if they aren’t careful they may well both lose this fight.  And it doesn’t really help much when Billy gets caught, too!

One scene in particular, possibly my favorite in the book, fascinated me. It’s towards the end, and it’s one of those scenes that makes you pull the book out and flip right to it just to read it again. This was a truly beautiful picture of transformation, if you asked me.

The Candlestone proved to me as good as its predecessor, and, like Raising Dragons, set itself up nicely for book three, Circles of Seven.   This series works in layers, it seems. The more you go, the deeper into its symbolism and meaning you’re drawn, and the more the reader sees.
