Genre:
Biblical/Fiction/Romance
As the only daughter of Caleb, a
celebrated leader of Judah, Achsah has grown up knowing a life of
privilege-as much as one can while living in the desert wilderness. The
people of Israel have been relegated to wander in the wilderness forty
years for disobedience and complaining against God. With only manna to eat
day after day, Achsah finds it hard not to complain, especially when she's
used to getting what she wants.
The years pass and Achsah develops into a beautiful woman. Though her
cousin Othniel has loved her for many years, Achsah sets her heart on
marrying Shemida, a handsome warrior from another tribe. In a fit of
defiance, she tells her father if she can't marry Shemida, she wants no
husband. But when Caleb refuses to allow the marriage, Achsah lets anger
distance her from her father for the first time in her life. In a moment
of rage over Achsah's stubbornness, Caleb offers her hand in marriage to
the man who conquers the city of Debir. Achsah has finally seen the error
of her stubborn pride and repented, but it's too late to change the
outcome. Will she be married off to some ancient man and doomed to a
loveless marriage? How will she live without Shemida by her side?
Rich with historical detail of ancient Israel,
Caleb's Daughter
is a virtual buffet of Biblical information. An experienced storyteller,
Kay Flowers does an amazing job of fictionalizing the final days of Moses
and the children of Israel as they wandered in the wilderness. As Achsah
grows into womanhood, the Israeli people leave the wilderness and begin
their conquest of Canaan. Achsah's character grows from a spoiled little
girl to a woman of honor and esteem. Othniel is a strong hero, remaining
true in his love for Achsah even when she thought she loved another.
Ms. Flowers deftly weaves in minute details of daily life with Biblical
history, giving the reader a clear picture of the lifestyle of the early
Hebrew people. Fans of Biblical history and sweet romances will find
Caleb's Daughter
a satisfying read.
