Title: Brother Word Author: Derek Jackson Publisher: Walk Worthy Press (Warner Press) ISBN: 0-446-69349-9 Genre: Inspirational/Contemporary/Fiction
T. R. Smallwood is right in the middle of a rousing message from the Lord when he suffers a heart attack and collapses by the pulpit. The black congregation believe he’s just in the throes of worship and also fall to the floor in mimic of their pastor. Only one man, a stranger, knows the truth. He gets up, walks to the preacher and places his hand on T. R. Smallwood’s heart, instantly stopping the pain.
Lynn Harper has a busy day planned. She’s ready to leave on vacation to the beach, but her sister wants her to stop by the church on her way out of town. Lynn agrees to find the time. But on her way there, she’s in a car accident. After being in a coma for six days, Lynn learns that while her injuries will heal, she’s going to be blind for the rest of her life. When the mystery man appears, she is miraculously healed.
Chance Howard, known as Brother Word, has a gift of healing, but he’s a man haunted by the past. He’s on the run, trying to escape the trauma of his memories. But now those he healed want answers, and the media is on his tail. Will Chance find any respite?
Brother Word has an interesting premise, though I find the story itself poorly written. There are several misspelled words in the copy I hold (cheery cheesecake instead of cherry and other minor mistakes similar.) The story is also written in no particular point of view. The story line itself is rather poorly developed. A good critique group would help Mr. Jackson’s writing skills.
However, the characters do have excellent dialogue, and the story is easy to read. It also proves that God is still in the business of performing healing miracles. Brother Word is a good book to read if you need your faith needs a boost. Discussion questions are included at the rear of the book. $12.95. 354 pages.
