Title: Brink of Death
Author: Brandilyn Collins
Publisher: Zondervan
ISBN: 0-310-25103-6
Genre: Inspirational/Contemporary/Suspense
When Annie Kingston moves her family to upper-class Grove Landing, she
hopes to leave behind the drug culture and crime epidemic of the Bay Area.
But barely a month passes before sirens awaken her in the dark of night,
and to Annie's horror, her friendly neighbor, Lisa, is dead. Even worse,
Lisa's daughter, twelve-year-old Erin, witnessed the heinous crime but is
too shocked to give a description of her mother's murderer.
When a local detective discovers Annie's artistic skill, he encourages her
to work with Erin to develop a composite of the murderer. A courtroom
artist, Annie isn't convinced she has the skills to do a forensic sketch,
but for Lisa and Erin's sake, she's willing to try. When the composite is
complete, Erin is stunned to look into the face of her mother's killer,
and Annie is shocked to see a face she's seen before. The only problem is that she can't remember how she knows the
face.
With her teenage son rebelling, an unsympathetic ex-husband, and a
murderer on the loose, Annie has just about reached her coping limit. And
then she discovers something that turns her blood cold.
In true thriller fashion, suspense author Brandilyn Collins starts her
latest book off with a bang. Immediately, readers are immersed in
heart-stopping events. Brink of Death is the first in Collins'
Hidden Faces series about forensic artist, Annie Kingston. Brink of
Death moves along at a steady pace with interesting twists and turns,
and a chilling ending that will have you turning pages at a frenetic
speed.
I didn't find Brink of Death quite as scary as Collins' other
suspense novels, and this may be good news for some readers who were
scared spitless before. Still, readers can expect an exciting and engaging
story that they will find difficult to put down. A unique setting and
true-to-life characters are another plus for this fascinating story. I'm
looking forward to reading future books in Brandilyn Collins' Hidden Faces series.
