Lady Constance Morrow has gone to the ship to say farewell to her uncle who, accused of a crime, is being sent to the colonies for his punishment. The dishonest Captain kidnaps and despite her pleas that she is a titled lady, he plans to sell her to the tobacco farmers wanting to purchase an English bride. She'll bring a higher price than most, since she isn't a criminal.

Drew O'Connor isn't looking for a bride, but he is looking for a maid, someone to help his grandmother with the household chores and look after his three-year-old sister, Sally. But by some twist of fate, he ends up with two women and now the town council is forcing him to marry Constance. Constance objects, since she is a lady and shipped unlawfully, but nevertheless, she is forced to marry Drew.

Drew sends his brother, Josh, back to England on the next ship to hunt for Constance's father and hopefully get this fine mess worked out. Will Josh find Constance's father and prove she's telling the truth? Or is Constance doomed to remain A Bride Most Begrudging?

Ms. Gist is a talented author with a humorous voice. I enjoyed reading this book, even though I am a bit tired of the premise of this story—marriages of convenience have been overdone this year. However, A A Bride Most Begrudging has a unique voice. Lady Constance is a feisty heroine, and Drew is attracted to her while confused by all she seems to be. He has trouble believing she truly is a lady, but she definitely is not common born.

I am looking forward to reading many more books by Ms. Gist. I recommend A Bride Most Begrudging for a different colonial story. $12.99. 316 pages.
