Title: Blessing Author: Deborah Bedford Publisher: Steeple Hill ISBN: 0-373-78546-1 Genre: Inspirational/Historical/Romance Uley Kirkland hides a secret identity underneath her cap . . .she works in a mine alongside the men in Tin Cup, Colorado, and they all believe she is a man. But she longs to shed her deception, especially when Aaron Brown comes into her life. Unfortunately, she is doomed to be viewed as a male for her own protection . . . and nothing can change that. Aaron Brown is literally knocked off his feet by Uley when they meet – just as he is pulling a gun on the town marshal. Now he is doomed to hang unless a miracle occurs. Yet, as strange as this happening in his life is, he can’t help but hope for a miracle. After all, isn’t it miraculous that a mere slip of a girl masquerading as a boy was the one who apprehended him? Time is running out for Aaron, and Uley is the only person in town willing to help him out. But what good will it do to fulfill his request and post a letter – other than help him say his goodbyes? Or will that letter bring him the help he so desperately needs? At first I thought Blessing would be another of the over-done, girl masquerading to be a boy stories that I’ve seen so much of recently. But Uley goes beyond just wearing the men’s clothing. She actually does a man’s job and has everyone in town fooled, believing she is really just a boy. Aaron is a puzzle and I had to keep reading to discover why Aaron would want to shoot the marshal. Why did the marshal know him and try to keep him from posting the letter? Blessing hooked me from the beginning and I couldn’t quit reading. I had to see it through to the end. This is not just another run-of-the-mill historical. Blessing is a book that will not be a blessing to miss. $12.95. 312 pages.
