And regardless whether it’s her role as a volcanologist, or a daughter, she wants to be dutiful. Ever since her mother died, Annie’s role has been the go-to girl. Anything her family needed, Annie found a way to get it done. The tightest spot has been their finances, and up until now, she’s been able to hold the wolf at bay. But things have gotten worse. Her brother, Tomi, is dead—and now her little sister, Leilani, has gone missing. Annie is the only one left for her father to lean on. And to blame. Dutiful. The way her mother died, and a recent accident of her own, is making it difficult for Annie to walk out onto the lava fields and do her job. Her boss has been understanding but now wants Annie to get back to her role as favored employee, and get on with their projects. Or let someone else have her job. Dutiful. One role that’s lived in Annie’s heart but never seen the light of day is Sweetheart. And once upon a time, she could imagine Mano Oana as the man in her life. Until it became clear it was her beautiful, younger sister who had Mano’s eye. Until she learned Mano was responsible for her brother’s death. And Mano Oana has a secret of his own. One he’s shared with no one, and puts even his ability to trust himself as a Navy SEAL in doubt. When Mano shows up at the Tagama home with some of her brother’s belongings, he learns about Leilani’s disappearance. Events and information conspire making it necessary for Annie and Mano to work together to find answers. In Black Sands, we are gifted with what Coble does so well—a furry little creature named Wilson (who I would love to have curled up in my lap at this moment), a setting we can smell and touch, and an ending that leaves us satisfied. I liked this book. $13.99. 304 pages.
