After an assignment goes bad, FBI Agent Rae Gabriella retires and moves to the small town of Justice, Illinois, to work as a private investigator with her former boyfriend, Bruce Chapel. But her hopes of a quiet life are soon dashed when young women visiting the town start turning up dead. Their money and jewelry are still in their hotel rooms, and there are no signs of trauma. Are the deaths from natural causes and just coincidental, or are they victims of something more sinister?

Bruce Chapel is happy to have his old partner by his side again. He’s hoping Rae will find peace in her heart after her bad experience. He wants to share how God has helped him through his problems, but that will have to wait until things slow down. When Rae is hired to investigate the death of the first young woman who died in a Justice hotel, Bruce worries Rae will get in over her head. After all, she’s staying in the same hotel.

Nathan Justice has his hands full with striking workers at the local tile plant, and now he finds himself distracted by Bruce’s lovely new partner. He can’t help admiring how Rae jumps in and goes to bat for the dead women, but he worries her physical similarity to them will cause her to wind up in trouble. Is it possible the deaths weren’t a result of natural causes? Can Nathan solve the case of the dying women and keep the explosive situation at the tile plant under control?

Before I Wakeis a new, exciting suspense by popular Christian fiction author, Dee Henderson. In true Henderson style, readers will keep guessing who the bad guy is. There are plenty of red herrings and tangents the author takes you on to keep you reading and wondering.

The characters come alive and will quickly have you worrying about them and hoping they don’t find themselves in troubling situations. Rea is a strong heroine, determined to find the truth no matter the danger it puts her in. There is a minor romantic triangle hinted at but isn’t fully developed.

It’s not clear if there will be a sequel to Before I Wake, but I’m guessing there will be. In an uncharacteristic move, Ms. Henderson left several core issues unresolved at the end of the book and may have fans grumbling if they aren’t addressed in a future novel. Having read all of Dee Henderson’s previous books, I’m putting my faith in her and trusting she won’t leave us readers hanging. For an interesting suspense with strong characters and plenty of twists, pick up a copy of Before I Wake. (396 pages, $13.99)
