Title: Beetle Bunker (The Wall Series) Author: Robert Elmer Publisher: Zonderkidz ISBN: 031070944X Genre: Inspirational/Juvenile/Historical/Fiction
Sabine Becker lives in a tiny apartment with her brother, mother, grandmother, and an aunt and uncle in East Berlin where the neighbors might be spies, books are forbidden, and sometimes people disappear in the dark of the night….
Sabine has been handicapped by polio and sometimes people make fun of her. Hoping to avoid some mean taunts Sabine goes through a construction site—and accidentally falls into a hole. She explores it before trying to get out, and discovers that it’s a forgotten underground bunker.
At first, Sabine uses the bunker as an escape to read without her family’s knowledge. But is it possible it might also be a way to escape East Berlin to West Berlin?
Beetle Bunker is the second book in The Wall series about the Berlin Wall. Set in 1961, the book is full of historical facts as Sabine watches the wall go up, witnesses people shot who are trying to escape, and fears for her safety because no place is safe. Readers will feel for Sabine as she longs for freedom, but doesn’t see a way to escape from East Berlin.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Beetle Bunker and am anxious to begin the third book in the series, Smuggler’s Treasure. These books are highly educational and are excellent for homeschooled children as it will teach them about WWII. Pick them up for your favorite 8 – 12 year olds today. $6.99. 155 pages.
