Title: Balancing Act Author: Kimberly Stuart Publisher: NavPress ISBN: 1-60006 -076-5 Genre: Inspirational/Momlit
Maternity leave is coming too quickly to an end, and Heidi Elliott is faced with returning to her job as a high school Spanish teacher. She finds a phenomenal babysitter for her six-month-old daughter, Nora, and heads off to the world of teenage angst. To her horror, she discovers that the substitute Spanish teacher has made a complete mess, and not just with the students, but in ways much more personal.
To make matters worse, Heidi’s husband, Jake, is going out of his way to help a beautiful Swedish client, and Heidi’s ex-boyfriend, Ben, has moved in, just a few doors down. When Heidi starts getting too stressed, Jake recommends she joins a support group for Moms. Heidi reluctantly attends one meeting, but there is no way she’ll ever need the support of a bunch of goody-two-shoes Christian women—or is there? Could they provide the lifeline that Heidi doesn’t know she needs?
Balancing Act is a true to life account of every lactating mom is familiar with. I laughed out loud at some of the misadventures Heidi has with her young daughter and trying to return to work, familiar all-too-well with that. There were some things about the book that I didn’t like, but all-in-all, Balancing Act is a great story with realistic characters.
There is a faith message included, but since Heidi isn’t really a Christian, it is very lightly woven in. I thoroughly enjoyed Balancing Act. A recipe for some yummy sounding pasta, several poems, discussion questions, a sneak peek at the next book in the series, and a long note from the author are included at the end. Moms of any age are not going to want to miss Balancing Act. It will make you relive the fun baby days with nostalgia. $12.99. 245 pages.
