Title: Arthur, the Christmas Elf Author: Valerie Connelly Publisher: Nightengale Press ISBN: 1-933449-23-3 Genre: Juvenile/Fiction/Holiday
Arthur the Christmas Elf has a very hard job. Each year, he has to convince selfish kids on the Endangered Children list to make gifts for their families instead of demanding everything they want. And this year his work is cut out for him. Can he teach two kids from completely different lifestyles the spirit of giving? The consequences of selfishness this time are dire. If they don’t make gifts for their families, their parents might die.
The story has some potential, and I like the idea of children making gifts for others instead of expecting everyone to give them everything. However, the writing style is a bit stilted, and I wondered how the children’s decisions would decide their parents’ fate. Definitely not recommended for children with separation anxiety, as the circumstances in this story would be very frightening for them.
However, the back of the book contains lots of interesting crafts that children can make with everyday items, including a necklace, rag doll, and pillow. The crafts range from simple to more challenging. The author has also included clear instructions for novice sewers. |
