Title: and the Shofar Blew Author: Francine Rivers Publisher: Tyndale House Publishers ISBN: 0-843-36582-6 Genre: Inspirational/Contemporary/Fiction
When Paul Hudson accepts the call to pastor Centerville Christian Church in central California, he is determined to serve God and the congregation to the best of his ability. His wife Eunice and their son Tim join him in this new adventure, and encourage and support him.
Within a short time the church begins to change, and so does Paul. His ambitions for the church grow with the congregation. But is this explosion of growth from the hand of God, or elsewhere?
As the daughter of a preacher, Eunice knows the ministry demands a lot from a pastor's family. But something seems desperately wrong. She turns to prayer for guidance, yet feels as if she's drowning in her husband's wake.
Paul stands firm as his visions for the church begin to collide with those of the elders. What was wrong with everyone? Didn't they want the church to become a beacon to the community? It seems even Eunice questions his authority.
During a visit from his parents, Paul hopes he will finally win the approval of his father, the celebrated pastor of a mega-church in Southern California. Instead, he is left with a sense of failure. How can he ever live up to his own father's success?
Throwing himself completely into his work, Paul loses sight of God and those things most important to Him. Secrets begin to fester and eat away at the heart of the ministry, until they threaten to destroy the very ones who need Christ the most.
Francine Rivers has captured the essence of what troubles many ministries today, and offers real hope. I highly recommendand the Shofar Blew to anyone in church ministry, or troubled by events in their own churches.
