Title: Amish Friends Cookbook Author: Wanda E. Brunstetter Publisher: Barbour Publishing ISBN : 978-1-59789-644-3 Genre: Cookbook
Wanda E. Brunstetter’s Amish Friends Cookbook contains 200 hearty recipes from Amish and Mennonite women. It is one of the most eye-pleasing cookbooks I’ve ever seen, with each page done in a parchment-look background and a red-gold border. Most recipes are simple to make with basic ingredients.
Sections include: Beverages Breads & Rolls Breakfast Foods Desserts (and there are lots of great ones) Jams and Jellies Main Dishes Miscellaneous (includes basic cleaners, play dough, and medical recipes) Pickles and Relish Salads and Sides Snacks
Besides common recipes like Chicken Dumplings and Baked Pork Chops are ones I’ve never heard of like Yummasete, Lazy Wife’s Dinner, and Oatmeal Whoopie Pies. I made several of the recipes and found each one easy and tasty, especially The Cake That Doesn’t Last, which is actually more like pineapple-banana bread. Mmm!
The Amish Friends Cookbook is more than a cookbook. Each section is divided with a full-color photo and several paragraphs depicting different aspects of Amish life, such as Amish Occupations, Amish Homes, Amish and Mennonite Quilts, and many more. You’ll learn all kinds of interesting facts about the Amish and enjoy a rare peek into their isolated community. Also included on some pages are short vignettes in green boxes, such as “Our deeds speak so loudly that our words can’t be heard” and “The best place to find help is at the end of your hand.”
For some simple recipes with a big flavor, try the Amish Friends Cookbook
